EAST SAINT LOUIS, IL-- With the recent news of the Washington Football Team of the National Football League (NFL) set to become the Washington Commanders, many fans may ask how professional sports teams create their name? The answer to this question can be pretty complex, but it also may be straightforward. 

The United Football League (UFL) has announced team names, colors, and logos for each of the league's fourteen ball clubs. Over the next several weeks, we will review each United Football League team and how those decisions were made. As many as four UFL team names have a previous history with their city, and others were created purely from internal league staff discussion and input. Over the years, many sports leagues have held team naming contests, hired consultant groups, or rebirth past ghost franchises to find the proper fit for their sports organization name.  

Saint Louis Stampede

The Saint Louis Stampede team name had previously been used by a now-defunct professional sports team in the St. Louis Stampede of the Arena Football League (AFL). The earlier version of the Stampede competed in the AFL for two seasons in the 1990s, earning an overall record of 17 wins and 11 losses. The Stampede made the AFL playoffs each season before suffering first-round losses in both tries. After suffering a second playoff loss, the Stampede will cease all team operations.

The new Stampede will debut in the UFL with different team colors and logos, hoping to find playoff success early in the franchise's history. In their debut UFL season, the Stampede will take the field, displaying navy blue, old gold, and white as team colors. They are inspired by the colors worn by the "Greatest Show on Turf" St. Louis Rams's during their NFL's 1999 season, with the new Stampede hoping to be just as explosive. 

The team's logo will be one of a single gold-colored stallion ready for the charge. The logo will inspire both players and fans as the Stampede players charge into battle for league championships. 

The decision to go with the team's name, colors and logo was through internal league discussions as no consulting firm or naming the team contest was held to determine the team name. 

The Stampede is just the first of each of the league's fourteen ball club team names, colors, and logos we will review to discover how each franchise came to be.
