by UFL Staff

RICHMOND, VA-- The Richmond Iron Horses are proud to announce the signing of Douglas Joyner III as the Head Football Coach. Coach Joyner III brings an extensive football background to the position as he looks to lead the Virginia's capital city team to a United Football League (UFL) championship.

Coach Joyner III started his football coaching career in August 2000 upon finishing his education at Shaw University—becoming the defensive coordinator at his high school alma mater Northwest Halifax High School in Littleton, NC. While at Northwest Halifax High, Coach Joyner III was on the staff of many Littleton's most memorable coaches.

After spending a season at Northwest Halifax High School, coach Joyner took his talents to the area's youth. Joyner assisted in coaching high school tennis at Oxon Hill High School varsity team, where several of his players earned all-state and all-region recognition. In the fall of 2011, Joyner was hired as the co-defensive coordinator for Cathedral High School in Springfield, MA, assisting the school in its first-ever state playoff birth. Coach Joyner III would continue his assistant football coaching duties in the high school ranks for the next several years.

As a player, Joyner III would continue to play semi-professional football for a total of twenty years before ending his playing career after capturing two Semi-Pro Football national championships, which included the league's only undefeated season with the Western Massachusetts Warriors.

After completing his assistant coaching roles and playing career in Massachusetts, Coach Joyner III would return to Richmond, where he has reached so many student-athletes with his passion for coaching girls/boys basketball, track & field, as well as football at the middle school, prep schools, and high school along with two semi-pro football teams in the local area where he has served as linebackers coach(Virginia Saints), Head Football Coach (Tri-City Bulldogs).

Since his return to Richmond, Coach Joyner III has worked in the Richmond Public School System, holding positions at several public schools, Holman Middle School as a defensive coordinator, Pocahontas Middle School as an offensive coordinator, George Wythe High School as an offensive & defensive line coach, and Glen Allen High School as an offensive/defensive line coach.

The Iron Horses will kick off the 2023 season, hosting the Virginia Beach Destroyers on Saturday, April 1st. Season Tickets are currently on sale, starting at as low as $200.
